When I think about where Groenhoek Plantjies began, I think of my Granny Theresa “Tikkie”’s stoep and the plants she cared for there.
That is where the first plants of this journey came from—and where my own love of plants took root. As her granddaughter, I found inspiration in watching her care for them. There was something special about the attention she gave each pot, the patience she had for new growth, and the pleasure she found in seeing her plants flourish. Through her example, I began to discover that same joy for myself. Over time, that love grew into Groenhoek Plantjies, my little homegrown nursery on the corner.
The plants from Granny’s stoep gave me a place to start. Her inspiration gave me the heart to keep going. As I care for the nursery today, I often think about how much can begin with a few plants and someone who loves tending them. For me, one of the loveliest parts of this journey is sharing that love with others. Whether you have a garden full of greenery or space for just one pot on a windowsill, there is joy in noticing a new leaf unfold or watching a small cutting take root. That is the feeling I hope you find at Groenhoek Plantjies. This little nursery carries a piece of our family’s story. I’m Marrilie, Granny Theresa “Tikkie”’s granddaughter, and every new bit of growth reminds me of where it all began.
